Hair Transplant After 1 Month

One month after a hair transplant, the scalp has largely healed but there is usually little to see — and that is normal. Scabs and redness have typically cleared, and most or all of the transplanted hairs have shed during shock loss, so the area can look much as it did before the procedure. The follicles are resting beneath the surface before regrowth begins around month four. Individual results vary.

What one month looks like

By the four-week mark the dramatic early healing is behind you. The recipient area's redness and scabs have generally cleared, and the donor area is well on its way to recovery. The surprise for many patients is how little there is to show for it: the transplanted hairs have mostly fallen out through shock loss, so the head can look similar to how it did before the transplant. This is expected, not a setback.

Why there's not much to see yet

The transplanted follicles are alive and in place, but they have entered a resting phase and shed their visible hairs. Nothing meaningful grows during this quiet period — the change comes later. Judging the outcome at one month is misleading, because the transplant's timeline is measured in months, not weeks.

Common worries at one month

One month is the low point for confidence for many patients, precisely because the early excitement has passed and there is little to show yet. It helps to name the worries directly: the transplant has not failed, the shed hairs are not gone for good, and a bare-looking scalp now says nothing about your final density. The result is measured in months, and the meaningful growth is still ahead.

"It's all fallen out" — that is shock loss; the follicles remain and regrow"Nothing is growing" — month one is a quiet phase by design"The donor area looks different" — it heals and hair regrows around it over weeks"Did it work?" — too early to tell; judge from around months six to twelve

What to do now

This is a good point to return to most normal routines while still following any remaining guidance from your team on exercise, sun and hats. Start taking monthly progress photos in the same light and angle so you can track the change that begins in a couple of months. Patience is genuinely part of the process here.

FAQ

Common questions

Why has my transplanted hair fallen out after 1 month?
That is shock loss, a normal shedding of the transplanted hairs in the first weeks. The follicles remain in the scalp and regrow, with early growth usually around month four.
Can I exercise normally after 1 month?
Many people return to fuller activity around this point, but timings vary, so follow your team's specific guidance on lifting, contact sport, swimming and saunas.
Are the small bumps on my scalp at 1 month normal?
Minor acne-like bumps can appear as follicles settle and new hairs begin to surface. They are usually temporary and settle on their own. Mention anything painful or persistent to your team.
Is the donor area supposed to still be visible at 1 month?
The donor area is usually well healed by a month, with scabs and redness resolved, though surrounding hair is still growing back to full camouflage. Any lingering numbness typically continues to settle.
Is it normal to see no growth at 1 month?
Yes. One month is a quiet phase after shedding, and little visible growth is expected. The meaningful change begins from around month four onwards.
Should I be worried at 1 month?
A quiet, unremarkable scalp at one month is typical. If you have specific concerns, raise them at your follow-up rather than judging the result this early.
Can I dye or cut my hair at 1 month?
Cutting existing hair with scissors is often fine, but colouring and anything harsh on the recipient area is best delayed until your team confirms. There is little transplanted hair to style at this stage anyway, as most has shed.
