Istanbul for Hair Transplant Patients: Travel, Stay and Recovery
A hair transplant trip to Istanbul usually lasts 3–4 days, most of it in and around Ataköy on the European side, by the Sea of Marmara. This guide covers what those days are like: arriving, the area you stay in, the weather by season, getting around, and what to keep away from while the grafts settle.

Arriving in Istanbul: airports, transfers and the first evening
Istanbul Airport (IST) is in Arnavutköy, north-west of the city on the European side; Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is in Pendik on the Asian side, so the drive from SAW crosses the Bosphorus and takes longer. Whichever you land at, the airport transfer is part of your package, and so is an interpreter for the clinic days.
Treat the first evening as rest. Eat something light, drink water rather than alcohol, and get to bed early: the procedure day starts in the morning and you will be sitting still for several hours. If you take regular medication, bring the packaging or a list so it can be checked at your assessment.
Where you stay and what the area around Ataköy is like
Ataköy is part of Bakırköy, a district on the Sea of Marmara coast. The municipality's own description lists coastal parks with walking paths along the shore at Ataköy and Yeşilköy — useful for short, easy walks once your team says you can go out. Packages with accommodation include 3 hotel nights; the hotel is confirmed with your booking.
Getting around without a car is straightforward. Marmaray commuter trains stop at Ataköy, the M1A metro has stations at Bakırköy-İncirli and Ataköy-Şirinevler, and the M9 line starts at Ataköy. On the days that involve the clinic you are driven there and back, so public transport only matters if you go out on your own.
A realistic plan for your days in Istanbul
Most of the trip is built around two fixed points: the procedure day and the check the next day, when the treated area is looked at and you are shown how to wash it. Everything else is rest, short walks and packing. Our guide on how the days in Istanbul are used sets out each day, and what happens on the procedure day explains the longest one.
If you are travelling with someone, the quiet days are when a companion helps most — with meals, errands and the trip back to the airport. Leave sightseeing for a later visit.
Getting around safely while you heal: weather, crowds, sun and hats
Istanbul's summers are warm: according to the Turkish State Meteorological Service, the average high is about 30 °C in July and August. Winters are mild but wet, with average highs around 10 °C in January and rain on about half the days in December and January. In summer, plan any time outdoors for the morning or evening and stay in the shade; in winter, pack a waterproof layer so you are not caught in the rain.
NHS advice after cosmetic surgery abroad is not to lie in the sun or go in the water, and the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery advises against intense sunlight after a transplant. Neither gives a number of days, so follow the timings your team gives you for direct sun, swimming and a hat. Busy trams, ferries and markets are best avoided at first: a knock to the head is the risk, not the crowd itself.
Eating, sleeping and washing: practical tips for the first days
You do not need a special diet, but a light meal before the procedure day and plenty of water afterwards help. Sleeping with your head raised is recommended for the first nights — the ISHRS patient brochure mentions a semi-upright position for two to three days — so a travel pillow is worth packing.
Washing is shown to you at the clinic and continues at home with the products you are given. Crusts usually loosen and fall away over the first one to two weeks; do not pick at them. The NHS advises being very careful with transplanted hair for the first two weeks and cutting down on exercise in the first month. After you fly home, follow-up continues for 12 months; the full hair transplant timeline shows what to expect month by month.
