What is hair transplantation?
Hair transplantation is a process in which hair follicles are transferred from an area of the body and are called the donor area to the region that suffers from hair loss. This process has been in operation for decades.
The beginnings of hair transplantation
The first hair transplant was documented in 1822, by a medical student and his teacher in Germany. The hair was moved from the hair area to another area. While it was described as successful and will help those suffering from baldness, there were few processes that followed until the 1990s.
The beginnings of advanced hair transplantation
Advanced hair transplantation began in 1939, initiated by dermatologist Doctor Okuda, using his punch technology, which came from the need to restore hair loss as a result of wounds and burns. This particular technique involves taking areas of skin containing hair follicles and moving them into small holes in damaged areas. Another dermatologist in Japan has reduced the size of follicles a few years later. The oriental doctor uses 4 mm thick bulbs, which are particularly large, and as a result, they do not look very natural. However, this scale was still used until the early 1970s and early 1980s and became known as hair sockets. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, small-sized bulbs began to be used, and very small bulbs were used to soften hair while small bulbs were used to fill other areas.
Evolution in the United States
The technologies developed in Japan were not on their way to the United States until the 1950s. Dr. Norman Orentrich performed this operation in 1952, and his study was finally published seven years later. In this study, he coined the term “donor dominance”, which states that implanted hair still shows the features of the area from which the hair was taken, rather than the area that was implanted.
Follicular Unit Extraction
The most modern techniques, developed in the 1990s, are known as FUE extraction, using a small tool with a very small diameter and a small motor. The hair is then transplanted to areas experiencing lack of hair. Both the donor area and the area where the implant will be anesthetized are anesthetized locally and the procedure requires no stitches or strands. This process is done very accurately and results are normal without any pain or fear. FUE technology became the preferred technique in early 2000 and is the gold standard for hair transplantation.
