An eyelid lift surgery or a blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure carried on to reshape the eyelids. A blepharoplasty may be necessary because of deformities, defects, or disfigurations. It is essential in cases where the upper or lower eyelid starts sagging or drooping due to aging in a broader and simpler sense. Blepharoplasty is statistically much more common amongst women. 88% of all blepharoplasty operations in the USA and 85% in the UK are carried on female patients.
The operation itself is associated with the eyelids. However, the facial structure involved with the eyelids includes the tissue, including the bones of the eye sockets, the upper bridge of the nose, and the upper part of the cheeks. Therefore, interfering with these parts of the face may be necessary during a blepharoplasty operation. An eyelid lift surgery may be carried out both because of cosmetic and functional reasons. The cosmetic reasons are obviously to remove aging signs and give the face a younger and tighter look in general.
On the other hand, functional reasons are the narrowing of the field of vision, especially the upper and outer parts, due to sagging upper eyelids blocking the individual’s view.
Blepharoplasty became famous in the East Asian countries, specifically South Korea. Since most East-Asian celebrities undergo the operation, this type of blepharoplasty is now called Asian blepharoplasty or East-Asian blepharoplasty. At the peak of its demand, one in five women in South Korea had undergone some operation.
Types of Eyelid Lift Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
According to its function, blepharoplasty operations divide into two main categories.
- Cosmetic blepharoplasty
- Functional blepharoplasty
Cosmetic blepharoplasty is carried out purely for cosmetic purposes, such as removing signs of aging or changing the person’s appearance, as is the case in Asian blepharoplasty.
On the other hand, functional blepharoplasty is carried out because the eyelids’ shape or form has various adverse effects on the individual. These effects can be listed as a reduced field of vision or the strain, fatigue, and ache in the forehead area because of continually struggling to keep the eyelids fully open or irritation because of the excess skin in the eyelid. A blepharoplasty may focus on either one of these aspects or both of them.
According to the part they focus on, blepharoplasty operations divide into three;
- Upper eyelid blepharoplasty.
- Lower eyelid blepharoplasty.
- Double eyelid blepharoplasty.
In addition to the above, if the operation is done on all eyelids, it’s usually called a quadruple blepharoplasty.
What Is The Cost Of Eyelid Lift Surgery?
Depending on the region of the country you live in, the surgeon, the surgeon’s subspecialty, the facility where the surgery is performed, and the extent of eyelid surgery you need, the cost of blepharoplasty varies.
For a simple procedure such as addressing both upper eyelids without removing fat, prices for an eye lift range from approximately $2,000 and $5,000 for a more complicated one such as surgery on all four eyelids, including removing protruding fat.
These are estimates of fees for surgeons only. Charges are additional for an outpatient surgery facility or in-office operating suite and can range from $800 to $2,000 per procedure.
Blepharoplasty may cost between £2,000 and £6,000 anywhere in the UK. The cost of any consultations, further surgery, or follow-up care that may be needed should also be considered.
While this procedure is conducted in most cases with the same objectives in mind, the exact nature of the procedure will vary from one patient to another. With this in mind, Canada’s average cost of eyelid surgery ranges from $3,000 to $6,500.
However, most hospitals and clinics in Istanbul offer blepharoplasty to be carried out from $1650 to $2200, which is much cheaper than the rest of the world.
